I’ve done the overpacking.

The lugging five bags to the beach.

The forgotten sunscreen.

The baby meltdown because I brought the wrong kind of hat.

Summer with a baby is magical, but only when you’re actually prepared.

After three kids and way too many trial-and-error moments, I’ve finally nailed down the best baby essentials for summer, the ones truly worth packing when the weather heats up.

Not the cute extras that just take up space — I’m talking about the gear you’ll actually use all summer long.

From beach days to backyard play, I’ve rounded up the 20 must-have baby items that make summer outings easier, safer, and a lot more fun.

These are the real MVPs. The things I personally use, love, and recommend to every new mom I know.

Let’s make your summer with baby as breezy as possible.

Here’s what you’ll want to pack.

The Ultimate Summer Essentials For Baby List

1. Stroller Fan (USB Rechargeable Clip-On)

This little fan is a total lifesaver.

I clipped it onto the stroller on hot walks and even used it in the car when the AC took too long to cool down.

It’s quiet, rechargeable, and the flexible tripod legs mean you can attach it just about anywhere — the stroller, car seat, beach tent, or even a high chair.

I never leave home without it in the summer, and Vanessa definitely naps longer when it’s on.

2. Baby Beach Tent (Pop-Up with UV Protection)

This baby beach tent was a total game changer last summer.

Vanessa was still under 6 months, so we couldn’t use sunscreen yet—and this tent made it possible to enjoy the outdoors without stressing.

It pops up in seconds, folds down easily, and has a drop-down section you can dig into the sand and fill with water to turn it into a mini beach pool.

She’ll be big enough to sit up in it this year, and I’m already planning to bring it to the beach and park all summer long.

It’s the kind of thing you’ll end up using way more than you expect.

3. Mambo Baby Float

This float has been a favorite for us two summers in a row.

Last year Vanessa lounged in it like a queen with the canopy up, and this year she’s big enough to lay on her tummy and kick her feet in the water.

It keeps her upright and secure, and the built-in canopy is perfect for sunny days.

If you’re planning any pool time this summer, I highly recommend it.

4. Beach Blanket (Waterproof + Sand-Resistant)

This beach blanket has become one of our most-used summer items.

I’ve used it for everything—from backyard play to beach trips to cloud watching with Vanessa.

It comes with stakes to keep it in place on windy days and folds up small when we’re on the go.

I love laying out toys and books and just spending time on it with the girls.

5. Sunhat with Chin Strap

This pink sunhat has been with us for years—since Alexa was a baby!

It’s gone through all three of my girls and still holds up beautifully.

The wide brim gives great coverage, the chin strap keeps it on during windy days, and it’s lightweight enough that none of my girls have ever minded wearing it.

Hand holding a fan of colorful disposable swim diapers with beach-themed prints, perfect for summer pool and beach days with baby.

6. Swim Diapers

These swim diapers are a summer essential if you’re hitting the beach, pool, or even the backyard splash pad.

I’ve always used this brand for all three kiddos.

They fit well, hold up great, and help avoid messy water moments.

Hand holding a bottle of Coppertone SPF 50 sunscreen lotion up to a cloudy summer sky, highlighting baby-safe sun protection for outdoor activities.

7. Baby Sunscreen

This is hands-down my favorite baby sunscreen.

It glides on super easily (which makes a huge difference with a wiggly baby), and it doesn’t leave that white cast a lot of mineral sunscreens do.

I keep a tube in my diaper bag all summer long.

8. Bamboo Baby Pajamas

These bamboo pajamas are a dream for hot summer nights.

They’re breathable, lightweight, and buttery soft, plus they hold up wash after wash.

We’ve tested tons of brands, and this one’s a favorite in our house.

9. Mesh Beach Bag

This mesh beach bag comes with us on every summer outing.

It holds wet towels, toys, snacks—you name it—and because it’s mesh, all the sand just falls right through.

I love how lightweight and roomy it is without being bulky.

10. Baby Sunglasses

These baby sunglasses are a must for bright days.

Not only do they offer UV protection, but they’re adorable and help keep baby from squinting in the sun.

I put them on Vanessa in the pool with her float and she looked like a little vacation queen.

Two Tommee Tippee insulated sippy cups in pastel pink and mint green, designed with leakproof spouts and easy-grip sides for toddlers.

11. Insulated Sippy Cup or Straw Cup

This insulated sippy cup keeps water cool even when it’s sweltering outside.

Toss it in the diaper bag for park days, and it’s great for encouraging hydration when it’s hot out.

Look for one with a flip-top straw or leakproof design, it’s worth it.

12. Rash Guard Swimsuits

Rash guard swimsuits are non-negotiable for us in the summer.

They offer extra sun protection without the constant need to reapply sunscreen, and they dry quickly too.

I love how many cute, functional options are out there now.

13. Bug Spray or Mosquito Netting

Baby-safe bug spray or a stroller mosquito net is a must for those evening walks or campfire nights.

No one wants a fussy, itchy baby!

I always pack one or the other depending on where we’re going.

14. Hooded Beach Towel

Hooded beach towels are one of my favorite practical summer items.

They keep baby warm and cozy after pool time, beach dips, or even just playing with the hose in the yard.

The hood helps dry their hair and keeps it from slipping off their shoulders like regular towels do.

15. Cooler Bag for Bottles and Snacks

This little cooler bag makes outings so much easier.

I pack a couple bottles, some cut-up fruit, maybe a yogurt pouch—and everything stays cold and safe to eat, even on hot days.

Bonus points if it has a shoulder strap.

16. Lightweight Baby Carrier (Breathable Mesh)

A breathable baby carrier is a lifesaver for summer errands, festivals, or beach walks when strollers aren’t ideal.

Look for one with mesh panels to help keep baby (and you) from overheating.

I used ours constantly with all three kids.

17. Baby Pool or Splash Mat

A little baby pool or splash mat turns your backyard into a summer oasis.

I’m looking forward to filling it up in the shade and letting Vanessa splash around while the big kids play this summer.

It’s easy fun that keeps them cool.

18. Baby Popsicle Molds (For Breastmilk or Purees)

These baby popsicle molds are one of my favorite summer mom hacks.

I used them with all three girls. Just freeze a little breastmilk or baby purée, and you’ve got a soothing, hydrating treat perfect for hot days or teething relief.

This photo is from the summer Hailee was still a baby, happily gnawing on a breastmilk popsicle in her high chair.

They’re easy to grip, baby-safe, and seriously a must-have during the hottest months.

19. Hydration Reminder Bottle for Mom

A hydration reminder bottle has been a game-changer.

It’s easy to forget about yourself when you’re chasing kids in the heat, but this helps you stay on track.

Staying hydrated keeps your energy up for the long days.

20. Backpack Diaper Bag

A backpack-style diaper bag is perfect for summer outings.

It keeps your hands free, distributes weight evenly, and is way easier to manage when you’re juggling strollers, towels, snacks, and sunscreen.

I always go for one with lots of compartments.

Final Thoughts

Summer with a baby doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

With just a few of the right essentials packed and ready to go, you can spend less time stressing and more time soaking up the moments that matter.

Like baby giggles in the sunshine and long afternoon naps under a fan.

Whether you’re headed to the beach, the backyard, or anywhere in between, I hope this list helps you feel just a little more prepared and a lot more confident.

Wishing you the sweetest, sandiest, sunniest summer ever 💛
