Planning a luau-themed birthday party for your child?
Whether you’re going all out or keeping it low-key, a tropical theme is perfect for summer — and surprisingly easy to pull together with just a few creative touches.
When Hailee turned 4 we threw here a luau birthday party, and it turned out better than I could’ve hoped!
I’m sharing all the fun ideas we used, what made the biggest impact, and a few extra luau party ideas I’d love to try next time.
Here’s your ultimate guide to planning a tropical kids party they’ll never forget.

Luau Party Decor Ideas That Make a Big Impact
You don’t need a huge budget to create a bright and festive luau vibe.
A few key touches go a long way, especially when you combine tropical colors, simple props, and reusable pieces.
- Pink and green tablecloths with faux leaf runners
- Pineapples wearing sunglasses as centerpieces, sitting on leis.
- Grass fringe table skirts for a beachy vibe
- Balloon arch in sunset colors with a mix of solids and clear balloons
- Fringe curtain backdrop behind the cake table
- Fake palm leaves and hibiscus flowers tucked along tables and around serving areas
Luau Cake Table Ideas
This was one of my favorite parts to decorate — bright, simple, and so festive.
- A two-tier cake with tropical leaves and pink flower frosting accents
- A tiki face piñata
- Colorful leis scattered across the table as decoration
- A grass skirt around the table and floral garland along the edges
More treat table ideas to try:
- Pineapple-shaped cookies
- Chocolate-covered bananas
- Dole Whip cups
- Coconut cupcakes
- Sand pudding cups with crushed graham cracker “sand”
What To Wear To a Luau Party
For Hailee’s party, we handed out grass skirts and flower leis to the kids as they arrived and it was adorable.
Hailee wore a tropical flower swimsuit during the water fun, and then changed into a yellow princess dress her grandma gave her as a birthday gift.
It wasn’t planned, but she felt special — and that’s what mattered most.
If you’re planning ahead, here are some outfit ideas for a luau birthday:
- Floral or pineapple print swimsuits
- Grass skirts and flower tops
- Hawaiian shirts and shorts
- Tropical sundresses or rompers
- Flower crowns, leis, or fun sunglasses
Kids don’t need to match a theme perfectly — as long as they’re comfy and having fun, you nailed it.
Luau Party Activities for Kids (That’ll Actually Keep Them Busy)
This is where things really came to life — we wanted the kids to play and not be stuck waiting for the next thing.
Here’s what we had:
- A giant inflatable water slide
- Sprinklers and water tables for younger kids
- Grass skirts and leis for dress-up play
- Open lawn for running around and beach ball games
Other easy luau party activities to consider:
- Limbo with a pool noodle
- Water balloon toss
- DIY lei-making station
- Hula hoop contest
- Sand art table
- Bubble machine for toddlers
Tip: If you’re doing water play, let guests know in the invite so they come in swimsuits and bring towels!
Luau Party Favors That Don’t Go To Waste
We kept it simple and themed:
- Grass skirts and leis (used during the party and taken home)
- Mini beach buckets they filled with candy from the piñata
Set them out on a favor table or hand them out as kids arrive to get them into the luau spirit.
Luau Party Planning Tips
- Prep everything the night before. We set up the tent, hung decor, and finished cakes the day before.
- Keep cold drinks stocked. Kids ran back and forth from the water slide to grab juice boxes and popsicles.
- Take pictures early. Snap your setup before it gets wild — you’ll be glad you did.
- Don’t over-schedule. We let the kids run free, and honestly, they didn’t need much direction.
Final Thoughts
Throwing a luau birthday party doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With some bright colors, fun water play, and a few tropical details, you’ll create a day your child (and their guests) won’t forget.
If you’re planning your own luau bash, I hope this post gave you plenty of inspiration — and permission to keep it fun and simple.
