Are you looking for ways to save money on maternity clothes?
If you’re like most moms you’ll find yourself wearing pants with panels starting in your second trimester and you may need them still for a few weeks after giving birth.
Thats only about six months and it doesn’t make much sense to shell out a ton of money on clothes you’re only going to wear for less than a year.
Staying comfortable during pregnancy is important but it doesn’t mean you have to go broke. Follow these tips below to learn how you can save money on maternity clothes.

Avoid Excessive Weight Gain
The first step to avoid overspending on maternity clothes is to not need them in the first place.
The longer you can fit in your regular clothes, the less maternity clothes you will need.
You can put off the need for maternity clothes by not over gaining weight.
Check out my post 9 Habits Of Women Who Don’t Gain Weight During Pregnancy.
Check Your Closet First
Before you go out and spend a fortune on maternity clothes, check your closet to see what might fit your bump.
Todays style is kind to pregnant women because oversized tops and stretchy pants are in. You probably already have a lot that will fit you for a while.
I have a lot of flannels and I like to wear them un-buttoned with a camisole underneath. That style also works great for easy access nursing if you plan to breastfeed.
Use The Hair Tie Trick
Moms everywhere get a few extra weeks out of there regular jeans by using the hair tie trick.
They loop a hair tie around their pants button, through the hole and back around the button to give their waistband another inch or two.
See the video on how they do it here.
Ask Friends And Family First
Don’t be afraid to ask around!
Your friends and family members who have had kids most likely have a box of maternity clothes taking up space that they’d love to get rid of or at least let you borrow.
Use Rakuten
Before you buy anything make sure to use Rakuten first.
Rakuten, formerly known as Ebates, is an app that gives you cash back on every purchase you make.
Plus when you make your first purchase of $25 or more they’ll give you a $10 dollar bonus.
I’ve received over $300 in cash back from Rakuten already.

Invest In A Belly Band
Once your belly has outgrown the hair tie trick you can keep wearing your regular jeans even longer if you use a belly band.
Just slip it over your unbuttoned and unzipped pants and it looks like you’re wearing a tank top under your shirt.
DIY Maternity Clothes
If you’re handy you can save even more money by converting your regular clothes into maternity clothes.
I found this super simple video that shows you how to turn your jeans into maternity pants. It’s so easy I really think you can do it even if you’ve never picked up a sewing needle in your life.
Buy A Little At A Time
Some women get excited and go out and buy everything they think they’ll need for maternity clothes for the whole nine months.
But the truth is there’s no way of knowing what will fit your body and when because everyone is different.
Buy a few things at a time and if you outgrow those you can always get more.
Buy Second Hand
Like I said before most women wear their maternity clothes for less than a year. When they’re done with them they’re still in great condition.
Then they give them away cheap at garage sales or on eBay.
Check there first and don’t forget to use Rakuten if you buy online.
Go For Dresses
If you love wearing dresses, pregnancy is the perfect time to do it. Instead of spending money on a top and bottoms, get a dress.
It’s a whole outfit for less!
I’m crushing on this one right now.
Always Shop On Sale Items
Stores are always having sales so don’t get caught paying full price for anything.
I use Rakuten and it shows me who’s having sales everyday so I never overpay. Plus once I make my purchase through Rakuten I get cash back.
So you see there’s absolutely no reason you need to go broke buying maternity clothes. You can be comfortable throughout your pregnancy without spending a fortune. Use the tips I’ve mentioned above to keep more money in your wallet!
